For some couples getting the stork to visit their home with a little bundle of joy, takes a little more time and effort than the others. With technology coming to the assistance of such couples with treatment options like the In-vitro fertilization IVF, they too can now enjoy a house full of cooing sounds. The age of a couple does play an important role in making this process a success however there are a lot of myths associated with age for IVF treatment and people usually ask Is age barrier to IVF? Here are the myths and facts revealed –
Myth: IVF is the best option if you want to delay having a baby
Fact: Having a safe and healthy pregnancy starts to get difficult with age not only with IVF but also naturally. That is because the egg quality of women is better when they are younger. This applies to men too, for their fertility or say sperm quality also starts getting weaker with age. With age, the sperm motility starts to go down continually for men. Due to this, in some cases, age affects IVF success rate.
Myth: There is no best age for IVF, you can have it anytime with your own eggs
Fact: For getting pregnant through IVF or naturally, the best age is before a woman turns 35, in case she is using her own eggs. With age, the egg quality deteriorates and the success rate with own eggs starts decreasing. In case you are using donor eggs, there is no IVF age limit and the chances are good even after the age of 40. For couples opting for an IVF with own sperm, the chance of having a baby is significantly higher if the man or the sperm donor is less than 40 years of age.
Myth: IVF age has no effect on the child, even after the parents are way above 40
Fact: Fetus and newborns of parents using own eggs, whose age is above 40 years at the time of undergoing IVF, run a slightly higher risk of birth defects and genetic abnormalities. These risks include mental health problems and autism spectrum disorder, but this risk is only marginally higher when the father is more than 40 years old. Approximately, one in every 400 women who are around 30 years of age and one in every 100 women who are around 40 years of age conceive a baby with a chromosomal (or genetic) abnormality through IVF. Chances of having a miscarriage and facing pregnancy complications are also a tad bit higher for older women than for younger women. If we have a look at the IVF success rates by age, then the live birth IVF success rate for women under 35 undergoing an IVF cycle is 40 percent while it is 4 percent for women over 42.
Myth: With IVF, it’s always the more the merrier
Fact: Yes, with IVF the chances of getting twins or triplets are higher but it’s not always the case. Majority of women conceive a single child and twins or triplets occur as multiple embryo transfers take place to increase the chance of pregnancy. After 40 years of age, the chances of getting pregnant are not as high as when you were in your 20s or 30s and that is the reason why multiple embryos are transferred so that the success rate is higher which in turn increases the chances of multiple pregnancies. In general twin or triplet pregnancies are high risk pregnancies so should be avoided as far as possible.
